Hollis Liverpool, known as Chalkdust or Chalkie — calypso's scholar-singer.

Hollis Liverpool, known as Chalkdust or Chalkie, is calypso's scholar-singer: a schoolteacher turned university professor who holds a PhD in history and ethnomusicology and has written books on the Carnival tradition. He began composing while a student at St. Mary's College, was once dismissed from teaching for performing, and answered his critics in song before being reinstated. On stage he is the lyric-first calypsonian, famous for biting political and social commentary, and he holds the record for the most Calypso Monarch final appearances. His winning songs span four decades, from “Ah Put On Meh Guns Again” in the 1970s to “Doh Touch My Heart” in 2009. He matters because he proves calypso can be both serious scholarship and popular art at once.
