Denise Belfon, known as “Saucy Wow,” is one of soca's most electrifying stage performers, famous for high-energy shows and her wining skill as much as for her voice. A talented school footballer offered a scholarship to Howard University, she lost that chance through injury and turned to singing instead, discovered by bandleader Roy Cape in 1990. She sang with the bands Black Sheep and Sound Revolution before going solo with “Ka Ka Lay Lay,” followed by hits including “Hard Wuk,” “De Jammette,” and “Saucy Baby.” Her 1999 track “Work” went on to be sampled many times over in house and club music, carrying her voice far beyond Carnival. She remains a headline fete act across the Caribbean, North America, and London.
