Jamesy P, born James Morgan, is the Vincentian singer behind one of soca's great crossover hits: “Nookie,” which reached No. 14 on the UK Singles Chart in 2005 and sold across the Caribbean, the US, and Canada. Before music he worked as a barber in Tortola, where he grabbed a microphone one carnival night and never looked back, winning local competitions in the Virgin Islands in the late 1990s. “Nookie” had first appeared in 2002, but its 2005 release — with a remix featuring M.I.A. — made him the best-known soca export St. Vincent had produced. In later years he turned songwriter for others, penning hits including Blaxx's “Hulk” and songs for Machel Montano and Farmer Nappy, and returned to performing with a more uplifting, spiritual sound. His career shows both sides of the soca business: the one-hit worldwide smash and the working songwriter behind other people's hits.
