Ricky Reid — the innovator of bashment soca, Barbados' high-energy answer to power soca.
Lil Rick, born Ricky Reid, is one of the most popular and successful musicians in Barbadian history, and the innovator of bashment soca — Barbados' high-energy answer to power soca. He started as a club DJ playing Jamaican dancehall in the early 1990s, then switched to singing soca in 1996, breaking through with “Hard Wine” and “Bumper Inspector.” His nickname “Hypa Dawg” comes from his 2002 hit of that name, and his stage command — whipping crowds into synchronised wuk-up routines — is legendary at Crop Over. His title haul includes four Tune of the Crop wins, six Party Monarch wins, and the Sweet Soca Monarch crown in 2018. Few artists embody the Crop Over fete spirit as completely as Lil Rick.
