Nadia Batson spent years as one of Trinidad and Tobago's most sought-after background vocalists and songwriters before stepping forward as a solo star — the classic behind-the-scenes talent who became a headliner. She sang with Andre Tanker's One World Contraband, then was the lone female voice in Kes the Band until 2011, when she left to form SASS, an all-female soca band. Her songwriting pen served other stars too, including hits for Michelle Sylvester, and her own “My Land” with Kes was runner-up in the Power category at the 2007 International Soca Monarch. She has also competed in the Chutney Soca Monarch, showing a range few soca singers attempt. Known as the “SASS Queen,” she matters as a writer, bandleader, and role model for women building careers on their own terms in soca.
