Ricky T, born Ricky Joseph, is one of the founding voices of the Dennery Segment — the hard, drum-driven soca style named for Dennery in east St. Lucia that has swept Caribbean carnivals. He came up DJing dancehall in St. Lucian clubs before entering soca in 2005, and won back-to-back Road March titles with “Container” in 2006 and “Pressure Boom” in 2007. “Pressure Boom,” remixed with dancehall star Mr. Vegas, became a region-wide hit and is cited as a defining Dennery Segment record, borrowing its drum pattern from Dominican bouyon. He won all of St. Lucia's local soca titles in 2008 and defended them in 2009, and represented the island at the Caribbean Soca Monarch in Trinidad and Tobago three years running. Alongside Motto and others, he turned a village sound into a genre with its own name.
