Rikki Jai, born Samraj Jaimungal in Friendship Village, Penal, is the most decorated champion in chutney soca history, with a record string of Chutney Soca Monarch titles. He began in soca with the 1988 single “Sumintra,” then moved decisively into chutney soca in the early 1990s, blending Hindi-flavoured melodies with Carnival rhythms. His best-known song, “Mor Tor” with Machel Montano, carried chutney soca to audiences far beyond Trinidad and Tobago's Indian community. In 2011 he won his sixth Chutney Soca Monarch crown with “White Oak and Water,” taking home a TT$2 million prize, and he later added further titles. In 2012 he received Trinidad and Tobago's Hummingbird Medal Gold, and in 2023 an honorary doctorate from the University of Trinidad and Tobago.
