Terencia “TC” Coward, known as the People's Queen, is Barbados' leading female soca voice across four decades, still writing and performing into the 2020s. She began at 15 on a dare to sing on stage, became co-lead vocalist of the band Coalishun alongside Rupee, and then built a solo career with albums including New Direction and Colour Me Soca. In 2009 she made history by winning both the Sweet Soca Monarch and Party Monarch crowns on the same day with the same song, “Hot Sun & Riddim,” and defended her Sweet Soca title in 2010. Her songs “Wrong Name (Kim),” “Jammers (Yes),” and “Know What Yuh Got” are Crop Over staples, and younger Bajan women singers name her as a mentor. The Pic-O-De-Crop crown has eluded her, but her standing with Barbadian audiences has never depended on it.
