St. Lucia · Groovy Soca
Known as Teddy or TJ — St. Lucia's most decorated soca ambassador.
Teddyson John, known as Teddy or TJ, is St. Lucia's most decorated soca ambassador, a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and percussionist who came to soca from gospel, jazz, and R&B. He worked as an entertainment manager at Sandals resorts, singing standards in hotel cabarets, before producers lured him into soca in 2007 — and he promptly won St. Lucia's first-ever Groovy Soca Monarch competition. His 2015 single “Allez,” a Creole-language anthem about facing life's challenges, took him to the International Soca Monarch finals in Trinidad and Tobago and won him Best Soca/Calypso Artist at the International Reggae and World Music Awards. In 2017 he was appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours, one of twelve St. Lucians so honoured that year. His later hit “Vent” won Groovy Soca of the Year at the International Soca Awards, and he founded his own annual U4RIA concert in St. Lucia.
